Model Agency: A Beginner’s Guide

A beginner entering the industry should aim to know all the nuts and bolts of a model agency in order to work with them efficiently.

Bookers/Model managers

It is hard to overstate a booker’s importance to a model agency. A booker is also known as model or talent manager. The key roles include scheduling shoots for the model, scouting for new faces and talents to add to the agency, handling interactions between various clients and the agency, negotiating terms of contracts and ensuring that models are of professional standard.

That’s not all; in fact the most important thing a booker does is to groom upcoming and aspiring models. When new faces are introduced, the booker has to introduce them to the modeling world and the fashion industry, while identifying which type of role or job suits the mode the best. The booker must interpret client’s needs and allocate the models to jobs that will best suit them. On an average day, a booker would have to attend to multiple calls and be very cool-headed in order to maintain relationships.

Scouters

You may be one of the lucky few ones to get encountered by Scouters, who are required to have an acute sensing of the fashion industry and be able to identify potential models wherever they see them. They should also have confident interaction skills like bookers and be able to attract the potential models to the model agency.

Specific Booking departments

Depending on the size of the agency there may be multiple departments for bookings.

Managerial/ Major Bookings: Consists of the CEO, important supervisors, bookers and senior member. They conduct regular meetings to ensure the agency is performing well and liaise with their biggest clients.

Editorial and Advertising: This is for relatively experienced and professional models. This will have experienced Bookers to try and get as many job opportunities for the models as possible.

New faces: A specific set of bookers will be assigned to help develop a model, their portfolio, and get the first few job opportunities. A lot of trial and error happens here; hence bookers pay a lot of attention to models and their growth here.

Fashion/ Runway/ Supermodel and Celebrities: The ivy league of modeling, and where the department has a good knowledge of the fashion industry and its happenings. Every scheduling and booking is handled to get the model successfully on the runway platform.

Finance department

Handling all the payment matters from client fees to model payments, and ensure proper Bookkeeping is done and accounts are audited and professionally maintained.

Marketing department

Handle all the publicity collaterals and Public relations of the agency. They maintain the online presence of the agency and market the agency to potential clients and models.

Receptionist

One can tell a lot about a person’s character from the way they handle a receptionist. A receptionists’ job is not easy and has to handle many walk-ins and appointments. The receptionist will be the one directing you to the right person for your interview or meet-up so always be nice to them.

Of course as a model you will meet many different photographers, bookers, managers, and clients. All of their roles are distinct and important for the smooth execution of operations. As a model, one should always remain humble and cooperate with everyone.

So how do you determine which film production company will suit your upcoming project? Before rushing to hire the first company you talk to, here is a list of questions to ask when choosing a video production company:

Ask whether the company has had success in your industry.

– If you are doing a film production for video marketing, ask the provider whether they have had success in your industry. You will need someone who had succeeded in your field, selling and delivering results to avoid risks from the ones that are learning on the job, on your budget.

Does the company work in different styles?

– If a provider can work in various styles, it is highly possible that they can also give you great advice and present a better and wider range of video types you can choose from, and not just one type of video.

Are there potential hold-ups during the production? What potential hold-ups could there be?

– Depending on the type of video you are planning to produce – animated or live-action, the answer will vary. If it’s live action, hold-up could vary from location permits, weather, and talent hiccups. If they are not able to name potential hold-ups after reviewing the project, they may not be the right professionals for your project.

Do they write well?

– Of course, it is important to know whether they are skilled in writing scripts. Whoever will be writing the script for your video should be accomplished and talented.

It is not that hard to maintain a clean fabulous look with your acyclic display cases but a few tips will still help you accord the displays you choose the best care.

Tip 1 – Cleaning the acrylic displays

The hard plastic is prone to scratches and you therefore will need to ensure that you handle it in the best way possible to keep such damages at bay. The display cases are usually delivered cleaned with anti-static cleaner to offer that extra protection from scratches. When you feel a need to clean them, ensure that you do not use solvent based cleaners or window cleaners because they will only make the material crack over time especially around the joints. A good furniture polish would be a much better choice because it forms anti-static barriers that will repel dust and resist scratching. You do not even need to add the polish every time you dust your acrylic display but every few weeks.

Tip 2 – Removing scratches from the acrylic displays

If you find that your display has suffered scratches, you can use metal polish wadding to get rid of light scratches. You will only need to rub affected areas in straight motions going forward and backwards across the scratch direction to get a better finish. The scratch may disappear or you will at least manage to fade it so it is not that visible. You can then spray your furniture polish after rubbing the wadding on the scratches.

Tip 3 – Drilling holes in your displays

Whether you have acrylic display shelves or acrylic display stands, you may have a need to drill holes. Poor drilling can lead to damages so start by ensuring that you regrind the drill bit to zero rake so it does not pull its way through. You should also ensure that you have something behind your display to prevent snatching once the drill goes through the acrylic. Avoid countersinking holes on acrylic displays because the screws will eventually pull the holes apart forming cracks.

You can get custom acrylic display cases that will serve your exact purposes for your business or otherwise. With the right care, your displays will serve your needs for a long time to come.

How to Become a Successful Female Fashion Model

It is a place rife with potential for scammers and criminals to take advantage of young and easily manipulated girls. In order to be successful, a model must take steps in the right direction and be aware of the common industry practices.

Choose the right agency

Fashion modeling is a specific skill set in areas such as Catalogs and Runway modeling, that an agency should not only specialize in but have experienced staff to coach and guide you. Choosing the right agency is half the battle won. The main indicators are that, a good agency won’t ask you to take nudes or sexually compromising photos, and it would have a good credible online platform and reputation. Hence, do your research and choose a legitimate and established agency. Also check with the agency how they can help you develop in the fashion modeling sector.

Make an impression that lasts

Submit good quality photographs to the agency when you are applying. Simple makeup, solid colored clothing and photo background, without any edits whatsoever is what you need to submit. Contrary to what most people think, agencies are not looking for a ready-made model, but rather a natural and humble talent they can work with. Submit a face shot, and body shot minimally. Similarly, if you get called up for an interview, dress simply and impress them with your confidence.

Be aware of the fakes and scammers

There are many pseudo-agencies and clients who will con you in a million different ways, such as forcing you to have to get intimate, abusing drugs and alcohol, and deceiving you into thinking that these are necessary sacrifices to progress in the industry. Truth is they will ultimately destroy your career rather than develop it. Never fall prey to these con artists and always stand firm on your values. You never have to do anything you don’t like, and modeling just like any other job poses chances for success without any need to resort to vices.

Lead a healthy and clean lifestyle

Female models of all kinds would give their first advice as to lead strict diets that enforce eating clean, low-carbohydrate and low- glycemic index foods, free of unhealthy sugar and salts. What you eat is truly what you are, when you’re a model. Exercising 3 to 4 times a week is also vital to keeping your body in shape to fit the specific criterions of fashion modeling. A healthy lifestyle also results in a natural skin glow which sets you apart from models that need a lot of makeup to look good. If you ever wanted a flawless skin, this is the best most organic strategy you can find, and of course, one that needs incredible discipline to follow too.

Practice

Agencies and major clients deal with many models. In order to be a successful female model, you must have good knowledge of runway walking, and the various stationery poses you can do for the camera. Most importantly you have to execute them with grace and confidence, which will only come naturally with adequate practice.

Conclusion

All in all, be willing to strive despite the struggle. Many at times, during the photo shoot clients are more interested in the final project outcome than a model’s needs and give them a tough time in trying various outfits and expecting you stand in different weather conditions for long periods of time. Such is the sacrifice a model who wants to be successful must commit on.
