How To Produce Ten Different Lacing Styles

There are several lacing or thonging styles which though form part of the construction of the article, also improve the aesthetic appeal of the article. Some of these styles are discussed in this article.

1. Oversew/ whip stitch
After the holes or slits are created, the thong is passed through the first hole from the underside of the leather and then passed on the top. It follows continuously in that manner till the process is complete.

2. Oversew with two colours
This lacing technique is similar to the oversew technique. However, the difference is that two different coloured thongs are used alternately.

3. Couching
In this process, a different coloured strip of leather is ‘laid’ in skived and stuck in position between the slits and the edges of the leather before the oversew lacing is done on it.

4. Criss-cross/ Cross loop/ Baseball X stitch
Two rows of thongs are used for creating this style. The first row is worked from left to right while the second row is rather worked from right to left. However, intermediate slits or holes are left when the first row is worked on for the second row to fill them in creating the criss-cross pattern.

5. Close criss-cross
This is an oversew thonging style that is worked in an alternate direction like the criss-cross technique. Two different coloured rows of thongs are used.

6. Running
Slits are cut at right angles to the edge of the leather instead of it being parallel with it spaced at equal distances. A flat needle is used to pass the leather strip in alternately in an ‘over-one’, ‘under-one’ manner to create a running thong.

7. Point de Ganse
In this technique, the strip of leather is passed through the first slit and down through the second leaving a small loop. The thong is then pulled up from the underside and passed through the small loop created from the top, pulling the stitch tight.

8. Slanting
As the name suggests, slanting thongs slants to the right. Two rows of slits are created in a slanting direction on the surface of the leather piece with a thonging tool. The thong is passed from the underside through the first slit at the left-hand end of the top row and down through the slit in the bottom row. It is then brought up through the second slit in the top row and down through the next slit in the bottom row.

9. Oversew and Buttonhole
This is a combination of oversewing and buttonhole styles which are done using two thongs of contrasting colours. One of the thongs is used in creating the oversew thonging. After that, the buttonhole is created. It involves threading the thong through one of the overcast stitches already made. It is then passed down through the bottom of the next stitch of oversewing pulling it through, leaving a small loop. Bring the thong up through the small loop and pull it tight. Pass the thong down through the loop while pulling the stitch tight.

10. Slanting and threading
Two contrasting colours of thongs are used. One row of the thong is made in the slanting thonging style. The other thong is threaded under and over the slanting stitches.

Things to consider when purchasing football cleats

For that first pair for a little boy or girl, every aspect of his or her football cleats is a novelty and a decision to be taken.

Sizing is one important factor, the weight another and of course the price. It should not be too big, which you can conclude it is, if it’s your baby finger width space between the toes and the top part of the boot. Something with a little less space than the width of a baby finger would be just right. Coupled with leather uppers, which are soft and flexible, such a pair of football cleats would be easy to break in. If you are worried about them growing out of it too fast, go for that baby finger width. The leather upper would stretch too, to accommodate growth spurt.

1. Positions played at – Are you a defender or a midfielder or both? Defensive players will want more protection of their feet from frenzied goal hitters and midfielders need a shoe that is good for running as they are the ones who traverse the length of the football pitch many times during the game. A forward will require a boot that allows for a neat strike and also be sufficiently lightweight to allow for sudden movements.

2. The nature of the football pitch – You could choose soft ground, firm ground or hard ground football cleats. The newer turfs that have special cleats for them are called the Artificial turf and artificial ground. So in short, we have FG, SG, HG, AG, AT and IN- this last one for any sort of court soccer play.

3. Type of upper material – This classification could be K- leather (kangaroo leather) leather (calf or goat), synthetic leather which is the most popular now and making great strides in its mimicking real leather. Additional traits like water proofing are added. Synthetic and mesh are lightweight upper materials while knit, the latest revolutionary entrant, has the upper lined with a protective layer to keep out the water.

When you see the advertisements for model rockets, it’s easy to overlook the fact that you need to buy launch equipment as well. In fact, terms like “ready to fly rockets” and “almost ready to fly rockets” are actually quite misleading, because you can’t fly them unless you also purchase a launch system and some consumables.

That, of course, can lead to a lot of disappointment on a Birthday or at Christmas and it’s a common mistake that many people make. The extra equipment and the consumables needed to launch a model rocket are not excessively expensive, but it is frustrating if you didn’t know that you needed them.

So, if you are thinking of buying someone a model rocket kit for a gift, here are the additional pieces of equipment and consumables that they will need to be able to fly their rocket and that are not usually included as a part of a standard kit.

Launch Pad

The launch pad is a part of what is known as the launch system and it is a relatively simple piece of equipment that provides a stable base from which to launch a model rocket. A launch pad will cost you in the region of $15-$20 and it is reusable.

Launch Controller

The launch controller is the other element of what is known as the launch system and it is a small, hand-held electronic device that heats up the rocket igniter which, in turn, ignites the rocket engine. Launch controllers cost in the region of $20.

Rocket Engines

You will usually have to purchase the engines, or motors, for you model rocket separately too. Rocket engines come in a large variety of different sizes, so it is important that you check what type of engine is recommended for the rocket that you have bought. Rocket Igniters

Recovery Wadding

Recovery wadding is another consumable that you will need to launch a model rocket. Recovery wadding is made of a flame retardant material and it is used to protect the recovery system, which is usually a parachute, from the heat of the ejection charge. Modelling supplies and tools

Depending on the type of model rocket that you buy, you may need some sundry modelling supplies, such as sandpaper, wood glue and plastic cement, as well as some basic modelling tools.

Flying Model Rocket Safety Tips

Model rocketry has a very good safety record, but, although they are sold as toys, they still need to be handled with care.

Here are some basic guidelines that you should be aware of if you are thinking of buying a child a model rocket.

Recommended Minimum Age

The recommended minimum age for flying model rocket kits is 10 years old, and it is also recommended that an adult be present for a rocket launch if the child is under 12 years old. However, there are some states with different rules. In California, New Jersey, Rhode Island and North Dakota, there are age restrictions on the purchase of rocket engines and there are some other restrictions on the use of model rockets. Treat Rockets with Respect

While model rockets may be classified as toys, they are not something that kids should be playing around with. The biggest danger is not from the rocket propellant itself, that only burns for a few seconds and it is a lot less flammable than model airplane fuel. The biggest danger is from being hit by a stray rocket that could be flying at 200 miles an hour or so. That’s why common sense precautions, like staying alert, standing well back and treating model rockets with respect are so important.

Model Rocketry is self-regulated in the US and the main source of safety guidelines is the National Association of Rocketry (NAR) safety code. This lays down a standard code of conduct for the construction and the flying of model rockets and it is an excellent document for youngsters to read when they get their first model rocket.

Only Use Commercially Available Rocket Engines

One of the biggest causes of accidents in model rocketry is people trying to concoct their own propellant. Stick to commercially manufactured engines and commercially available rocket kits available from reputable manufacturers like Estes, unless you really know what you are doing. You should also only use the engines that are recommended by the manufacturer for any particular rocket.

Do Pre-Flight Checks

Even the best model rocket kits can develop flaws, especially after they have been flown more than once. Always give your rocket a final check over before you launch it. Make sure it is stable on the ground and it won’t fall over when the engine ignites, check for any loose parts, and make sure that the nose cone is not on too tight and the recovery system is not packed in too tightly.

Use an Appropriate Launch Site

Choose a launch site that is in an open area and is away from buildings, highways, power lines, and any low flying aircraft. Also check that there is no dry vegetation near the launch site that could be ignited by the engine. Wide open spaces are best for safety reasons and it will also make recovery much easier as well.

Launch Precautions

At a lunch you need to be aware of what other people are doing as well as following some basic rules yourself. When you are preparing the rocket for launch, make sure that no one else if playing around with the launch controller. Make sure that everyone is clear of the launch area and give a loud and clear countdown before launching.

Model rocketry is and exciting hobby and safe one. Like any hobby of this type, you need to follow common sense rules and not take any risks. In fact, model rocketry is far safer than some other hobbies that kids could take up and it’s educational too.
